The future with the verb IR in Brazilian Portuguese

In Portuguese there are many verb tenses and they can be quite complex, but we make things simple when we speak.

For instance, instead of using the verb tense Futuro do Presente to talk about what we are going to do in the future, we use the verbo IR + another verb.

Most Brazilian almost never say things like "Eu viajarei na semana que vem".  We say "Eu vou viajar na semana que vem."

Instead of using the difficult verb conjugation (viajarei), we simply use the verb IR (vou) and the other verb in the infinitive (viajar), so you only have to learn the conjugation of the verb IR and you are good to go! :-)

Here is the conjugation of the verb IR in the Present, which is how you are going to use it.

Você vai
Ele/Ela vai
Nós vamos
Vocês vão
Eles/Elas vão

Now, let's complete some sentences using the verb IR to form the future.

1. Quando vocês _________ se casar?
2. Você ________ fazer uma festa?
3. Acho que ele não _____ ter problemas para se adaptar ao Brasil.
4. Eu _________ comprar o meu vestido de noiva na semana que vem.
5. Onde vocês ________ passar a lua de mel? Nós ________ viajar pro Havaí.
6. Ele ________ fazer a despedida de solteiros duas semanas antes do casamento.

Learn Brazilian Portuguese - Christmas Vocabulary

I believe it's extremely important to learn about the culture of the country where the language you are learning is spoken and since Christmas is coming I thought it would be nice to teach you some vocabulary related to Christmas in Brazilian Portuguese, so let's dig in.

Tradições do Natal brasileiro

No Natal comemoramos o nascimento do menino Jesus, mas esse significado às vezes fica um pouco esquecido.

No dia 24 de dezembro à noite servem a ceia de Natal, que não pode faltar o peru, o chester, a rabanada, tender e bolinhos de bacalhau (herança portuguesa).

Outro costume do brasileiro no Natal é reunir a família para um grande almoço no dia seguinte com o que restou da noite anterior e acrescentando algumas coisinhas a mais. (Na minha família chamamos os restos de comida de "já te vi" porque já vimos essa comida na noite anterior)

Na madrugada do dia 24 para 25 as crianças ficam à espera do Papai Noel, que na sua imaginação, chega num trenó com nove renas e um saco vermelho grande com muitos presentes. Muitas crianças escrevem cartinhas para o Papai Noel.

Já é tradição dos Correios no Brasil escolher algumas cartinhas de crianças carentes e entregar pessoalmente o presente à criança que escreveu a cartinha.

Na época de Natal várias empresas se reúnem em algum restaurante, bar, casa de eventos para troca de presentes e brincadeiras de amigo secreto. Isso acontece também entre amigos.

Outra coisa muito comum no Brasil é montar árvores de Natal e Presépios de vários tamanhos e modelos, em igrejas, parques e nas casas.

No Brasil também é época de visitar abrigos de idosos, creches, orfanatos e albergues para levar comida, brinquedos ou apenas dar um abraço a quem não tem familiares por perto. No Natal as pessoas ficam mais sensíveis a trabalhos voluntários.

Learn Brazilian Portuguese - Comparatives

As you probably already know I've been teaching Brazilian Portuguese for a while now and last week I was teaching a class and my student and I started talking about the differences between his country and Brazil.

Believe it or not, he had great things to say about Brazil. The foreigners who decide to learn Brazilian Portuguese see many excellent features in our country and that makes us realize how wonderful Brazil really is.

In order to make comparisons in a more accurate way in Brazilian Portuguese I taught him what you can see below:

Adjetivos: comparativo

O comparativo pode ser de igualdade, superioridade ou de inferioridade.

Igualdade	Superioridade	Inferioridade
tão + adjetivo + quanto Ex: Ele é tão grande quanto seu apartamento	mais + adjetivo + (do) que Ex: A cidade de São Paulo é mais rica (do) que a cidade de Salvador.	menos + adjetivo + (do) que Ex: A região Sul é menos populosa (do) que a região Sudeste

Irregular

Os adjetivos irregulares são quatro, mas apenas na comparação de superioridade e inferioridade. São eles: bom, mau, grande e pequeno.

Singular                          Plural

bom(boa) ↠ melhor          bons (boas) ↠ melhores

mau (má) ↠ pior              maus (más) ↠ piores

grande ↠ maior               grandes ↠ maiores

pequeno(a) ↠  menor       pequenos ↠  menores

Exemplos:

• Esse apartamento é melhor do que o outro, tem mais janelas e é mais iluminado.
• O apartamento velho é pior do que esse, era muito escuro o apartamento velho.
• O apartamento parece maior porque faltam móveis.
• Essa cozinha é maior do que o nosso quarto.
• O nosso quarto é menor do que a cozinha.

Use os comparativos de: superioridade (+), inferioridade (-), ou igualdade (=) dos adjetivos entre parênteses para completar as frases abaixo. Veja o exemplo e verifique as respostas ouvindo o áudio.
1)	- Este modelo novo de celular é muito completo. É mais completo que (+) o modelo anterior. (completo) - Eu acho que esse é  __________ (+) do que o meu. (bom)

How I Became a Brazilian Portuguese Teacher- How You Can Learn Brazilian Portuguese

Oi! Tudo bem?

Can you understand the sentence above? Well, it's written in Brazilian Portuguese and it's my native language! For those of you who don't know, I'm Brazilian, but I don't live in Brazil. I've been living in Argentina since 2011.

Oh, I forgot to say what the sentence means! "Hi! How are you?" 

Anyways, you probably know I am an English teacher as a second language, which means I teach English to people who are learning it as second language and not to native speakers of English.

When you study to become a language teacher, you must study not only all the aspects of the language, but also the methodologies and the techniques to be able to share your knowledge and help your students learn.

As a native speaker of Portuguese I never formally studied to become able to teach it, but I was forced to understand why I say things in a certain way so that I could explain my own language to my husband who is Argentinian. 

I had to search Brazilian Portuguese books for foreigners and blogs that explained why I spoke the way I did :-) and I got very curious about my own language, so I decided to teach a few intermediate students of Brazilian Portuguese.

I've taught people from Argentina, Chile, Mexico, the United States and New Zealand and it was great fun! It was a challenge, of course, but one that I deeply enjoyed.
