Expression of the week- same old same old

Hello, hello!

I heard the expression of the week on a TV show about cars. While I was looking for the video of this show on Youtube I found the video of a song.
The title of this song is the expression of the week- same old same old. Before I explain it, let me just express my opinion about this song and this singer: AWESOME!!!

So watch the video, enjoy the song and then read the explanation of the expression "same old same old".



 So, same old same old is an expression used to say that a situation or someone's behaviour remains the same, especially when it is boring or annoying; to say that nothing has changed, on the contrary, it is just the same.

Example 1:
A: Hi Jack, how is everything?
B: Same old same old (everything is the same)

Example 2: The husband says to his wife: "I'm going to stop drinking that much". The wife, who knows her husband so well answers: "yeah, same old same old. (you always say that, but you never change)

Example 3: I bought the new Corolla, but it was same old same old. (there were not many differences, it was like the old model)

Expression of the week- to run some errands - Correction

Hi everyone,
after a long time, the Expression of the Week is back.
And today's expression has everything to do with our busy lives.

Definition: to have some things to do, like going to the bank, going grocery shopping, taking the clothes to the dry cleaner, picking up the kids from school... something quick!

Example1 : I can't go to the movies with you today, I still have some errands to run! (the same as- I still have some things to do.)

Example2: Before we start our trip we have some errands to run.

NOTE: We normally  say "some errands to run"

Summer Spaghetti

Hi everyone!
I know this is not a culinary blog, but we can learn a lot from recipes, besisdes we all love a good meal. This recipe is perfect for a hot summer day, or any day! :-)
Now, I present my Summer Spaghetti Recipe:

Ingredients:


• 200g shrimps
• 5 tomatoes
• 2 garlic cloves
• olive oil
• herbs
• salt
• pepper
• juice of half a lemon
• 250g of spaghetti

Preparation:
First, boil the shrimps for 5 minutes (no more than that). Then, dice 2 tomatoes and put them in a bowl. After boiling the shrimps, mix them with the tomatoes, add olive oil to cover the tomatoes, salt, pepper, the herbs (I like to use basil) and 1 peeled clove of garlic. Let this marinate for a while in the fridge (the longer the better, but if you don't have time, it will taste good too).
Blend the other 3 tomatoes with olive oil, the other clove of garlic, salt and the lemon juice. ( you can do this in a blender or with a mixer). Mix it with the diced tomatoes and the shrimp.
Cook the spaghetti as you like, and finally toss it into the sauce.
You can add shredded cheese if you like.

Conversation Classes- Text in English, Português and Español

When I started writing this post I wanted to talk about conversation classes and their importance in the process of learning a new language. And besides that, I wanted to sell my products and services, but it just seemed too commercial and it had no intimacy, it was pure sale for the sake of sale. However, this is not me and every time I read the text I thought to myself, what a soulless text! Who is writing this? A computer? Anyways, the reason why I think conversation classes are so important is because I believe that if you want to learn a new language you have to SPEAK it. However what my experience has shown is that the biggest complaint of students is the fact of having studied English many times and for many years, but not knowing how to speak it.

So, I stopped to think about this complaint and I’ve come up with one reason. There might be other reasons too, but I think this aspect is essential. Let’s picture a situation which is pretty real, by the way.  You started an English course and you are going to have 2 classes of 1 hour each a week, so you will have approximately 8 hours of class a month. In your class there are 10 students. If we divide the 60 minutes of the class equally, each student will have 6 minutes, which means that in one hour you will only be able to speak for 6 minutes. In one week, you will speak 12 minutes and in one month you will speak 48 minutes. Remember! You are paying to have 8 hours of class a month, but you can only speak 48 MINUTES of those 8 hours. Now, tell me, do you think you can learn this language in a short period of time? I don’t think so! Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying that you cannot learn at Language Courses, all I’m saying is that it will take a huge amount of time for you to speak fluently. And if you don’t have a lot of time, the best choice for you is private lessons. Real classes or virtual classes(through skype), but private!

Let me tell you a bit of what we can do in our Skype Classes. The classes are one-on-one, just you and the teacher. This way the classes are directed towards your needs and interests. If you work as a lawyer, but your passion is painting we can discuss about those things during a conversation class, for example. Your wish is my command! Because I believe learning has to be meaningful, I think my goal as a teacher is to look for materials and activities that are relevant to my students, things that are a part of their reality. By doing so I ensure that the learners will be motivated and eager to learn.

Quando comecei a escrever esse post, queria falar sobre aulas de conversação e a importância delas no processo de aprendizagem de um novo idioma. Além disso, eu queria vender o meu produto, mas o texto me parecia muito comercial, nada íntimo, era simplesmente a venda de um produto. Porém, eu não sou assim e cada vez que lia o texto pensava, que texto sem alma! Quem está escrevendo isso? Um computador?

Bem, a razão pela qual eu penso que aulas de conversação são tão importantes é porque eu acredito que para aprender um novo idioma você tem que FALAR esse idioma. Contudo, o que a minha experiência me mostrou é que a maioria dos alunos reclamam de terem estudado inglês muitas vezes e por muitos anos e não serem capazes de falar inglês.

Então, eu parei para pensar nessas reclamações e cheguei a um motivo para esse dilema. Deve haver outras razões também, mas acho que esse aspecto é essencial. Para que entendam a minha ideia vamos imaginar uma situação que, na realidade, é bem real. Você começou um curso de inglês e vai ter 2 aulas de 1 hora cada por semana, logo terá aproximadamente 8 horas de aula por mês. Na sua turma tem 10 alunos. Se dividimos os 60 minutos da aula igualmente cada aluno terá 6 minutos, isso significa que em 1 hora, você somente vai poder falar por 6 minutos.  Em uma semana, terá 12 minutos e em um mês serão 48 minutos. Lembre-se! Você está pagando por 8 horas de aula por mês, mas dessas 8 HORAS você só terá 48 MINUTOS para falar. Diga-me, você acha que pode aprender esse idioma em um curto período de tempo? Eu acho que não! Não me entenda mal, eu não estou dizendo que não se pode  aprender em cursos de idiomas, o que estou dizendo é que vai levar muito tempo para você falar fluente. Se não tem muito tempo, a melhor escolha para você é aulas particulares. Aulas reais ou virtuais (através do Skype), mas acima de tudo, particulares!

Vou contar um pouco do que podemos fazer em nossas Aulas por Skype. As aulas são individuais, somente você e o professor. Dessa maneira, são direcionadas para seu próprio interesse. Se você trabalha como advogado, mas sua paixão é pintar, podemos discutir sobre esses assuntos durante as aulas por exemplo. Seu desejo é uma ordem! Eu acredito que o aprendizado deve ser significativo, por isso, penso que meu objetivo como professor a é buscar materiais e atividades que sejam relevantes para meus alunos, algo que faça parte de sua realidade. Fazendo isso posso garantir que os alunos estarão motivados e ansiosos por aprender.

Cuando comenzé a escribir este comentario quería hablarles sobre clases de conversación y la importancia que tienen en el proceso de aprender una lengua. Y además de eso quería ofrecer mis productos y servicios, pero me pareció demasiado comercial, y no tenía intimidad, era pura venta, sólo por la venta. Sin embargo, yo no soy así y cada vez que leía este texto pensaba que le faltaba alma! ¿Quién escribe esto? ¿Una computadora?

Como sea, la razón por la que pienso que las clases de conversación son tan importantes es porque creo que si querés aprender una nueva lengua tenés que HABLARLA. Sin embargo lo que mi experiencia me ha demostrado es que la mayor queja de los estudiantes, es el hecho de haber estudiado Inglés muchas veces y por muchos años, y no saber hablarlo.

Entonces me detuve a pensar sobre esta queja y llegué a una conclusión. Debe haber otras razones también, pero creo que este aspecto es esencial. Imaginemos esta situación que es muy real. Empezaste un curso de Inglés y vas a tener 2 clases de 1 hora cada por semana, así que tendrás aproximadamente 8 horas de clase por mes. En tu clase hay 10 estudiantes. Si dividís los 60 minutos de clase por 10, cada estudiante tendrá 6 minutos, lo que significa que en una hora podrás hablar sólo 6 minutos. En una semana hablarás 12 minutos, y en un mes vas a hablar 48 minutos. Recordá! estás pagando para tener 8 horas de clase al mes, pero sólo podés hablar 48 MINUTOS de esas 8 horas.

Ahora decíme, ¿Crees que podés aprender esta lengua en un corto período de tiempo? Yo no lo creo! No me malentiendas, no estoy diciendo que no podés aprender en estos cursos de idiomas, todo lo que digo es que te va a tomar un montón de tiempo hablar fluidamente. Y si no tenés mucho tiempo, la mejor opción para vos es lecciones particulares. Clases de verdad o clases virtuales (a través de Skype), pero particulares!

Dejame que te cuente un poco de lo que podemos hacer en estas clases por Skype. Las clases son para 1 sola persona, vos y el profesor. De esta manera las clases son dirigidas hacia tus necesidades e intereses. Si trabajás como abogado, pero tu pasión es la pintura podemos conversar sobre esas cosas durante la clase, por ejemplo. Tus deseos son órdenes. Porque pienso que el aprendizaje tiene que ser significativo, creo que mi objetivo como profesora es buscar materiales y actividades que sean relevantes para mis estudiantes, cosas que formen parte de su realidad. Haciendo esto te aseguro que como estudiante estarás motivado y dispuesto a aprender.

Music Time - Text in English, Português and Español

Do you like music? If you do, it is a great way to learn a new language. Personally I love it and I have learned a lot listening to songs in English. Back in the time when I first studied, Internet didn't exist, so if I liked one song I had to wait for it to be played on the radio or to buy the CD. Having the lyrics was not easy either. I remember the first song I learned in class, it was "Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman" (soundtrack of the movie Don Juan de Marco) I used to walk around with the lyrics waiting for it to be played on the radio, and when they played it I went crazy trying to sing it along. I wanted to pronounce everything correctly and understand the meaning of all the words.
In our English Classes through Skype we can use songs to start a discussion about the ideas of the composer,  to practice listening, to study a bit of grammar, to acquire new vocabulary and to understand expressions. How about trying a music activity right now?

Você gosta de música? Se a sua resposta é sim, saiba que a música é uma ótima ferramenta para aprender um novo idioma. Pessoalmente, eu amo música e aprendi muito escutando canções. No tempo em que eu comecei a estudar inglês, não existia Internet, então se eu me apaixonava por uma música tinha que esperar que tocassem na rádio ou comprar o CD. Conseguir a letra também não era tão fácil. Ainda lembro a primeira canção que aprendi na minha aula de Inglês : "Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman" (trilha sonora do filme Don Juan de Marco). Eu ia para todos os lugares levando a letra dessa música, ansiosa por escutá-la na rádio e quando tocavam, eu pegava a minha letra e começava a cantar. Queria pronunciar tudo corretamente e entender o significado de todas as palavras.
Nas nossas Aulas de Inglês por Skype, podemos usar uma canção para começar uma discussão sobre as idéias do compositor, praticar a escuta, estudar um pouco de gramática, aprender vocabulário novo e entender expressões. Que tal experimentar uma atividade com música agora mesmo?

Conseguir la letra de la canción no era fácil tampoco. Todavía me acuerdo del primer tema que aprendí en mi clase de Inglés. Iba a todos lados llevando la letra, esperando que la pasaran y cuando la tocaban agarraba mi letra y empezaba a cantar. Quería pronunciar todo correctamente y entender el significado de todas las palabras.
